When designing Dior‘s Fall/Winter 2022 collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri incorporated technological advancements in textiles to envision a more contemporary image of luxury fashion. The collection revisited the Maison’s Bar jacket, transforming its original structure with a system that heats and cools the body through technical inserts created by D-Air Lab, an innovative development to Dior’s craftsmanship. Advancing past traditional archetypes for fashion and accessories allowed this outing to traverse the past, present, and future of womenswear with new forms of expression. Artist Mariella Bettineschi reflected Chiuri’s vision with a set that featured a backdrop entitled The Next Era, where slightly altered portraits of women painted by male masters from the 16th to 19th century were hung throughout the perimeter of the show space, recontextualizing the gaze of art history and the conditioning of women as a passive subject. The futuristic feel of the collection is a daring move for Dior, as the Maison explores alternative avenues to update its savoir faire for a newer, technologically savvy generation.
