In the Emmy-Award-winning Canadian sitcom, Schitt’s Creek, Catherine O’Hara’s comically bombastic character Moira Rose delivers one of the series’ most memorable lines. When asked about her favourite season, she replies “Awards”.
Moira would be thrilled because we’re in the thick of that season. The Golden Globes took place earlier this month and the Critics Choice, BAFTAs, Spirit, and Oscar award ceremonies are all happening over the course of the next 3 months.
As we celebrate the best Hollywood has to offer this year, we’re also taking the opportunity to celebrate the best in beauty, too. From the centuries-old gothic look of Nosferatu to the glitz and glam of Anora, here are some of our favourite beauty trends inspired by this year’s most popular films.
Nosferatu – Gothic Romance
When you hear goth, you probably think heavy eyeliner. But add in the 19th-century element of Nosferatu and the look becomes a bit different—with paler skin and dark eye bags being common at the time.
Emma Corrin’s choice of brown liner and berry-red cheeks and lips at the film’s London premiere is the perfect modern take on the gothic romance beauty trend.
Anora – Glitter, Sparkles & Tinsel
Sean Baker’s comedy romance hit, Anora, sees its main character Ani (Mikey Madison) grapple with the old aphorism that all that glitters is not gold. When it comes to the beauty looks though—the more sparkle, the better.
Throughout the film, Ani’s signature look combines hair tinsel, sparkly eyeshadow, and jewelled acrylic nails. Annie Johnson, the film’s head of makeup, says Fenty Beauty’s diamond-dusted highlighter was her go-to for an all-over glow during shooting.
The Last Showgirl – Skin-Forward Glam
The showgirl aesthetic may be all glitz, glam and gorgeous headpieces, but when she’s not performing, both Pamela Anderson and her on-screen character Shelly, prefer a more minimal approach to their makeup.
Saie’s Glowy Super Gel Lightweight Dewy Multipurpose Illuminator is the perfect base for dewy, hydrated, luminous skin—whether choose to add makeup or go bare-faced is up to you.
Babygirl – Feminine Chic
In the A24 erotic, romantic, thriller Babygirl, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a high-powered CEO whose life flips upside down after meeting Samuel (Harris Dickinson), a young intern.
Though the film has its share of sensual and seductive scenes, Kidman‘s makeup looks are relatively unassuming. Her clean, feminine, and elegant look is made complete with an ultra-natural blush and rosy lipstick.
A Complete Unknown – Big Hair
It was the sixties—the decade you know and love! People are going into space, the economy is booming, the TV is colour, and Bob Dylan is on the radio. In A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet plays the iconic musician on his meteoric rise to fame.
Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, a fictional character meant to represent the real-life artist and activist Suze Rotolo, who—just like the other women of her time—was a big fan of a super voluminous do.
Wicked – Bewitching Pinks & Greens
The blockbuster success of the movie-musical Wicked has given us so much—great songs, great press, great friendship, and great looks. Whether it be in the film or on red carpets, pink and green are two colours we can’t get enough of.
Through extravagant nails and sparkly eyeshadows, co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have been delivering a masterclass on how to channel the witches of Oz.
