The Hawaiian Islands need no introduction. Scattered across the middle of the Pacific like shimmering jewels, they’ve long beguiled visitors with verdant landscapes, glassy blue waters and the convivial Aloha spirit of its people.
Midway along the main Hawaiian archipelago is Oahu – the most populous island and home to Honolulu – the state capital and cosmopolitan hub. Just a 5.5-hour direct flight from Vancouver, it’s an easy escape into high-rises, vibrant culinary hotspots and designer boutiques – all set against the raw tropical terrain.

Here, Waikiki Beach flexes – Oahu’s legendary stretch of golden sand, framed by swaths of towering hotels. A bustling paradise, it’s the island’s heartbeat and just steps from some of the best dining, nightlife and shopping around. The vibe is lively and boisterous, and if you’re craving a high dose of urban buzz alongside your beachfront oasis, Waikiki is the place to be.
Private Escape
Perhaps you’re yearning for something a little more off the beaten path? The tony enclave of Ko Olina is about 40-minutes from Honolulu and immerses visitors in a clandestine ambiance. Studded with private residential communities, an 18-hole golf course, and beaches set on tranquil lagoons (perfect for stand-up paddle or a gentle afternoon float), this is an idyllic alternative to the dense metropolitan atmosphere of Waikiki.
Anchoring this quiet corner of the island is Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina where low-slung architecture and ocean views replace the palpable energy of Waikiki with something slower and more indulgent.
The feeling settles in immediately: in the open-air lobby where trade winds whisper freely through the white space, in rooms finished with banana-leaf wall coverings and local wood, each opening onto a lanai with Pacific Ocean or mountain views. The culinary program alone is worth the trip: at the award-winning, beach adjacent Mina’s Fish House (from multiple James Beard award-winning Chef Michael Mina), the day’s catch arrives practically still glistening from the sea, while sunset cocktails at the Five-One-Six rooftop bar become a ritual among hedonist-seeking travelers. Add in the Naupaka Spa & Wellness Center built for total surrender, pickleball courts, a wildly seductive adult pool with ocean views and a soothing playlist, and an adjacent secret beach where snorkelers often spot sea turtles, it’s easy to see why this stretch of coastline has quietly become Oahu’s most coveted address.
Join the Club
While any of the ocean-facing guest rooms offers a heaping slice of bliss at this Shangri-La, treat yourself to an abundance of perks by booking a Club Room where you’ll have access to the largest Club Lounge in the Four Seasons portfolio – a retreat built for lingering over golden-hour views with a guava infused libation and a heaping spoonful of tangy poke.
Tucked on the fourth floor, formerly the resort’s sprawling Presidential Suite, the over 2,000-square-foot lounge greets guests with panoramic views of the Pacific and Oahu’s western coastline. Amenities are aplenty and include a dedicated concierge, daily breakfast, grab-and-go snacks, wines, and all-day refreshments, plus culinary delights built around locally sourced ingredients and signature cocktails at sunset.
Given there can often be a wait for breakfast at La Hiki, the property’s main restaurant, the Club Lounge is the ideal antidote, especially when traveling with little ones. Not to be missed, though, is La Hiki’s weekend brunch – a decadent smorgasbord of indigenous delicacies, complete with crab, lobster and oysters galore.
Club access carries a premium over standard accommodations, but factor in daily breakfast, all-day snacks and refreshments, sunset cocktails and enough evening bites to satisfy dinner cravings, and the value quickly becomes clear.
Relaxation + Recreation
Stroll to the hotel’s lounge-chair-dotted beach and the allure of this haven sinks right in. Perched at the edge of one of Ko Olina’s four manmade lagoons, the water resembles one massive swimming pool, with barely a ripple in sight. And snorkelers will be right at home thanks to heaps of reef fish waiting to be admired. There are also four pools on property, including a sweet, ocean-adjacent spot for toddlers and a sybaritic adult-only retreat that deserves an award for the best on the islands.
Amenities are flowing. Complimentary stand-up paddle boards and snorkel gear are available, and the hotel can arrange for a traditional outrigger canoe ride that conveniently launches from the lagoon. Or dive into something more adventurous like scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, zip-line tours, or a hike at the nearby Ma’ili Pillbox or Ka’ena Point trails.
Disconnecting is a cinch – whether lolling at the beach, by the adult pool, or at the Naupaka Spa & Wellness Centre. This 35,000-square-foot sanctuary is rooted in Hawaiian therapies including hula-inspired Lomi Lomi massages and volcanic clay body treatments. With cozy indoor and outdoor nooks for curling up with a book or dozing off, you can easily spend half your day here.
One of the many highlights is a group or private sound bath with Pi’iali’i Lawson. An ancestral and intuitive energy realignment practitioner, his practice channels generations of Native Hawaiian healing lineage into each session. Using colorful crystal singing bowls, chimes, breathwork, and traditional chant, his sessions guide guests into a state of stillness. Part sound journey, part spiritual homecoming, any time spent in Lawson’s presence is a deeply restorative and grounding experience.
Wine + Dine
Four Seasons Ko Olina happens to be a locally loved culinary destination, and while Mina’s Fish House is an essential reservation, gourmands will find plenty to love beyond it too: Italian specialties at Noe, casual lunch and dinner at La Hiki, poolside bites and cocktails at Waterman Bar, coffee and grab-and-go goodies at Hokulea in the lobby, and Asian-fusion fare at Mānalo Lounge on the water’s edge.
Between the flawless setting, variety of cuisine, and endless activities, there’s little reason to leave the property, though a day trip to Lanikai Beach with its powdery white sand and impossibly turquoise water is worth the detour. And just across the street from the hotel is a quaint outdoor mall, home to the quintessential ABC Store stocked with sundries, sushi, grocery items, and smoothies, alongside home-grown shops and restaurants, the scent of coconut sunscreen wafting in the sultry afternoon air.
