Met Gala 2023: Sofia Coppola on Her Favourite Memories With Karl Lagerfeld and CHANEL

Can you tell us about your first meeting with Karl Lagerfeld?

“I went to Chanel as an intern at 15 and thought it would be a serious, intimidating placeā€”I was surprised
at how lively and fun Karlā€™s studio was!”

What is your best memory with Karl Lagerfeld?

“Watching him work in the studio, fitting the modelsā€”Veronica Webb walking around in ’80s CHANEL
looks and them styling the girls.”

The most amazing CHANEL fashion show under Karl Lagerfeld you’ve ever attended?

“There was so manyā€”I was glad I got to see the rocket take off, but also the last one I saw in Paris with
his Italian garden with real flowers was incredible and the MET Egyptian one!”

How is the look you are wearing tonight iconic to CHANEL?

“I think itā€™s so CHANEL and so Karl for CHANEL!”

How is sharing this moment of Karl’s celebration with Virginie Viard so important?

“I know how important Karl was to her and he was important to me as a young impressionable girl, Iā€™m
happy to be with her to celebrate him and also to see this exhibit and his legacy.”
