Meet Pilosoule: An Outerwear Label Modernizing the 1800s Duster Coat

Pilosoule is a Manhattan-based outerwear label reinventing the 1800s Duster Coat for the metropolitan woman. Founded by Kit Pilosof and Ally Soule, the duo are building pieces that fit the duality of their lives between fast-paced city living and slower countryside escapes.

Their curated Fall/Winter 2025 collection has just launched and modernizes the traditional Duster—a silhouette emblematic of Pilosoule. Looking back, Dusters, or ‘Duster Coats,’ originated among horsemen in the 1800s as a simple yet functional design to protect from dust and debris year-round. Pilosoule has since taken this timeless silhouette and upgraded it, focusing on preserving the garment’s heritage and history while delivering high-tailoring. The result? Season-less luxury outerwear for sophisticated women, perfectly transitional from day to evening.

The collection comprises seven pieces designed for maximum wearability, blending carefully selected fabrics and precision tailoring. There are eye-catching styles like the Bomber Duster, a full-length piece that combines a loosely tailored jacket of imported Italian wool with a taffeta skirt and is finished with hook-and-eye closure details. If you’re just looking for the upper portion of the Bomber Duster, the Bomber Jacket is the same style but in a cropped fit.

Meanwhile, the Walking Duster features princess seams for a subtle, feminine contour, while bell shapes at the cuffs soften the silhouette. The Row Duster is a dress featuring a structured vest and a full skirt, with hidden pockets and water-resistant fabrics—balancing elegance and utility.

For more playful takes in the collection, there are also styles like the Row Vest, which offers a reimagined take on a 1800s-style dress, transforming it into a sleeveless top with sharp tailoring. The Rider Blazer and Rider Vest both feature two princess seams, slit pockets, and signature details, such as mismatched silver concho buttons, which add character and flair to the pieces and are repeated throughout the collection.
