Want to wow your crowd? A stunning floral arrangement can do just that. The first step to pulling off your vision is finding the right florist. As soon as we saw some arrangements from Rachelle Soucy’s Botany Floral Studio, we knew she was ours. Each arrangement was a work of art, mixing colours and textures in the most memorable way that gets people on Instagram messaging you, “Where did you get those flowers?!”. So, before you start sourcing your inspiration pictures, keep reading because we asked Soucy to share five of the biggest trends coming out of her studio and popping up at this year’s weddings.

Colour, and a lot of it!

Why it’s trending now:

We are seeing more colour in weddings. Colour adds flair to a wedding, making it stand out from the rest. You do not have to follow colour trends. Picking a bold colour is memorable.

How to put your twist on it:

Pick a colour theme, a mix of bold, bright colours or one stand-out colour. Florists can help clients if they feel that adding colour is risky. Colour preferences are intensely personal, and every client is different. We can start by offering a base palette, and slowly incorporating more colours into the mix, so the client sees that adding colour can add more to a traditional or neutral palette.

Unusual combinations

Why it’s trending now:

Sticking with colour here, we are seeing more unusual colour combinations. Couples are becoming more playful with colour, moving beyond traditional colour combinations – light and dark colours of similar colour harmonies.

How to put your twist on it:

Mix exciting colour combinations by combining a soft pastel hue with a bold pop of colour.

Texture and fruit

Why it’s trending now:

We have been seeing this trend for the last decade, but more and more clients are embracing adding unusual textures and fruits to their wedding florals, especially in tablescapes and clustering fruit at the base of larger showpiece arrangements.

How to put your twist on it:

Including fruit and texture is a great way to bring some character to your arrangement. A simple starting step would be to pick a fruit that suits your colour theme or has particular significance to you and go from there, letting the florist get creative!

Shopping Local

Why it’s trending now:

Local flowers are often requested and for good reason! Those flowers are fresh and in season, not travelling from afar. Aside from the environmental reasons, local flowers add wonderful personality and whimsy to wedding florals. Grasses and textures are becoming more popular when mixed with more traditional wedding blooms, like roses and orchids.

How to put your twist on it:

Encourage the florist to suggest what is amply available and in season at the time of your wedding. A local shrub-like smokebush and field grasses add texture and whimsy to minimal tablescapes or large showpieces.

Minimalism…and maximalism

Why it’s trending now:

Couples are using both minimalism and maximalism trends in their weddings, not picking one or the other. A popular trend is scaling back on-the-table flowers. A move towards minimalism in the tablescapes, especially inspired by the Japanese Ikebana style. A few stems are inserted into flower frogs in shallow bowls, and dotted down tables, finishing the look with added fruit and candles. With more budget and focus being put into large, over-the-top statement pieces, either suspended or not, adding impactful moments at certain points of the wedding.

How to put your twist on it:

Move from minimal in the tablescapes, inspired by Ikebana style and add extra budget into those wow moments!
