Behind the Scenes: How To Achieve the Effortless Beauty Looks From Our Spring 2019 Haute Couture Story

Refresh your seasonal beauty routine with lightweight looks to elevate your natural skin. For our Spring 2019 Haute Couture shoot, national makeup artist for CHANEL, Julie Cusson, mastered barely-there makeup proving less is more. Here, she reveals how she created luminous skin using her go-to products for the dawn of a new season.

Take us through the look you created for S/magazine’s Spring 2019 Haute Couture shoot.
“I wanted a sculptural ‘no makeup’ makeup look, to reveal the femininity of Noemi and Miqueal. I underlined the brows, eyes, cheeks, and lips but in a soft way with natural warm shades. Also, as a makeup artist, my goal is to always create a statement. Here, the crystal shine on the cheeks and the eyelids is the key; the element that drives the look.”

How did Haute Couture influence your beauty look for this shoot?
All of these Haute Couture creations are impressive by their colours, textures, volumes, and shapes, so I wanted the beauty as a compliment, not a competition. That point influenced my perception, and I knew I wanted the beauty to be part of the entire look.

What are the three go-to products to create the looks for Miquel and Noemi?

Baume Essentiel in Transparent
Rouge Coco Flash

The makeup look was quite natural and subtle compared to the looks featured in the shoot. Why is it sometimes good to focus on great skin and clean beauty look when wearing a bold fashion look?
“You need to understand what you wear. In this photo shoot, all of the looks could be defined by one word: opulence. So my focus was to enhance the skin, to bring luminosity, and the effect is immediately attractive by the union between the clean beauty and the looks. A minimalist makeup look can be stronger than bold makeup!

Heading into spring, what’s a product that women can add to their beauty kit for an instant refresh?
Skin needs to be nourished and protected but prepping the skin before the makeup application is also an important step. I use Hydra Beauty Camellia Water Cream for a flash freshener.
