Behind the Scenes: CHANEL Makeup Artist Julie Cusson on Creating a Glowing Look for Summer

As an extension of the crisp fashion’s showcased in the summer issue’s Summer Remedy story, CHANEL makeup artist Julie Cusson pulled from the brand’s extensive roster of cosmetics to conceive three seasonally appropriate looks fit for a variety of occasions. Whether looking to master a striking matte visage for daytime or creating a glam aesthetic for an evening engagement, here, Cusson provides expert tips and tricks on recreating editorial makeup looks in real life.

BASE MAKEUP LOOK

Flawless Summer

“The inspiration was to create a flawless summer makeup look with a satiny base and an overall bare aesthetic. I wanted to creating a makeup look that could be a perfect base to easily transform with a quick makeup application, but also perfect as a look on its own.

“To start, I chose an ultra-long wear foundation that controls shine (Ultra Le Teint Fluide in shade 152), and then sculpted the face with Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream in shade 395 Deep Bronze. I lined the eyes with a shimmery brown shade (Stylo Yeux Waterproof in shade 943 Brun Agapé) to bring a sultry aesthetic to the gaze.”

TRANSITION LOOK N°1

Flush of Colour

“Transitioning to a colourful fresh summer makeup look is quite easy—simply add a luminous coral blush on the cheeks and apply the same shade on the eyelids (Joues Contraste in shade 430 Foschia Rosa). Next, frame the lips with a bloody orange shade (Le Crayon Lèvres in shade 176 Blood Orange) and add a touch of shiny pink lip colour on the centre of the lip (N°1 de CHANEL Lip and Cheek Balm in shade 4 Wake-Up Pink). Finally define the brows with an eyebrow gel (Le Gel Sourcils in shade 350 Transparent) to complete this vibrant visage!”

TRANSITION LOOK N°2

Sophisticated Matte

“To switch from glowy makeup to a refined and sophisticated matte look, apply a foundation powder (Ultra Le Teint in shade 152) all over the face to remove any shine. Darken eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil (Stylo Sourcils Waterproof in shade 812 Ebéne) and set them with an eyebrow gel (Le Gel Sourcils in shade 370 Brun). To finish off, add a mysterious deep rich Bordeaux shade with a satiny finish to the lips (Rouge Allure Laque in shade 75 Fidélité).”

TRANSITION LOOK N°3

Summer Glam Up

To inject a bit of glamour into your appearance, mark the waterline with a deep brown-plum eye pencil (Crayon Yeux in shade 58 Berry) to give depth to the gaze. Coat the lashes generously with black mascara (Le Volume Stretch Extrême in shade 10 Noir). Apply an intense warm coral shade to the lips (Rouge Allure L’Extrait in shade 838) and shape with a lip pencil (Le Crayon Lèvres in shade 182 Rose Framboise). This glamourous look is perfect for a summer evening out.
