Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum Welcomes New Exhibition: Canadian Modern

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) opens a new innovative exhibition, Canadian Modern, showcasing design across furniture, fashion, ceramics, and electronics spanning almost a century with over 100 items from the mid-twentieth century to now. The exhibition celebrates the work of Canadian designers and manufacturers over the decades curated by Dr. Rachel Gotlieb with assistance from Dr. Arlene Gehmacher. From mass-produced objects to hard to come by limited-editions, the showcase of items gives the rich history of Canadian-made pieces with influence such as Fluevog footwear, an assortment of stereo’s, the graphic design and story behind the CBC Logo, and IZ Adaptive, an inclusive and accessible clothing brand by Izzy Camilleri. “Design and craft are often in flux, speaking to the moment in reflecting or shaping perspectives and needs,” says Dr. Arlene Gehmacher, L.R. Wilson Curator of Canadian Art & Culture at ROM and consulting curator for Canadian Modern. “Canadian Modern allows us to appreciate the ROM’s current collections and imagine possible new directions.”

The Canadian Modern exhibition is open from December 3rd to July 30 2023 at the Royal Ontario Museum. View the gallery below for a look at some of the key pieces on display.
