Three Time-Bending Tales to Read Now

As the temperature drops and weekends find you sitting indoors next to a fire (whether said fire is real or not), you’re going to need some reading material. So, because we like you so much, we’ve rounded up three new must-read novels. But these aren’t your typical linear tales. Instead, each one weaves together stories from two different time periods, because sometimes two is better than one.

First, Irina Reyn introduces her ambitious heroine in The Imperial Wife (Thomas Dunne Books), Tanya Kagan, an auctioneer on a mission to authenticate what might be the Order of Saint Catherine. Then, readers are tossed back several epochs to Catherine the Great’s 18th-century Russian court, where they encounter the possible owner of the Order.

In Serial Monogamy (Doubleday), Kate Taylor alternates between chapters chronicling modern-day novelist Sharon’s discovery of her husband’s infidelity and her struggle with cancer, woven with sections of the character’s own Victorian-era novel series, about the infamous love affair between Charles Dickens and his mistress.

In similar time-shifting fashion, Kate Lord Brown’s The House of Dreams (Thomas Dunne Books) weaves together accounts of journalist Sophie Cass’ investigation into the renowned painter Gabriel Lambert’s hidden past, and episodes from his war-refugee past back in 1940.
