S/magazine’s Oscars 2018 Highlights

The 90th annual Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles last night where stars both on and off the screen were recognized for their amazing work in film. The stage was designed by Derek McLane for the sixth year in a row, featuring a stage decorated in 45 million worth of Swarovski crystals.  Following the historic moments and political statements that took centre stage in past years, the evening’s tone was relatively tame and light. Below we take a look at some of the best dressed of the evening and the powerful moments that made us proud.

HELEN MIRREN AND THAT JET SKI
It’s been wildly known for years that the oscar speeches can run long and usually end up being cut short by music. This year, the Academy had a playful approach by offering a jet ski to award-winners with the shortest acceptance speech. The jet ski was shown off by the glamorous Helen Mirren in a very Price is Right style. Host Jimmy Kimmel made it clear at the end of his speech that Helen Mirren was “not included” with the jet ski prize.

MARY J. BLIGE PERFORMS ‘MIGHTY RIVER’
Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mudbound, Mary J. Blige gave a moving performance of ‘Mighty River’ from the movies soundtrack, which also earned her a nomination for Best Original Song. Blige mastered the soulful performance setting the bar high for the performances to follow.

JORDAN PEELE WINS BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Jordan Peele took home a much deserved award for Best Original Screenplay for his knock-out film, Get Out—S/magazine favourite. This award made history, as Peele is the first African-American screenwriter to receive the award. Although Peele mentioned in his speech how hard it was for him to finish writing the movie, we’re incredibly happy he followed through with it. Get Out also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.

FRANCES MCDORMAND’S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH FOR BEST ACTRESS
Frances McDormand was shaking as she got on stage to accept her award for Best Actress for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri but she made sure to use her platform because she “had some things to say.” Aside from asking all the female nominees in every category of the evening to stand with her, she ended her speech with two powerful words: inclusion rider. A concept explored by Stacy Smith which refers to having at least 50% diversity in cast and crew members on set.

ASHLEY JUDD, ANNABELLA SCIORRA, AND SALMA HAYEK LOOK TO THE YOUTH
These three powerful women took to the stage to shed light on the trailblazers of our time, saluting the #MeToo movement, and touching on diversity in film. “The changes we are witnessing are being driven by the powerful sound of new voices, of different voices, of our voices, joining together in a mighty chorus that is finally saying: “Time’s up” said Ashley Judd who was amongst the first string of actresses to come out against Harvey Weinstein.
