Nicole Kidman on the History of Watchmaking and OMEGA’s Powerful My Choice Campaign

Last October, OMEGA hosted a star-studded event to celebrate the legacy and history of women’s watchmaking. The event took place at Marathon Music Works in Nashville, home to Nicole Kidman, OMEGA’s ambassador since 2005 and the evening’s guest of honour. Additional friends of the brand were in attendance, including Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski, and singer-songwriter Julia Michaels.

For the intimate event and dinner reception, Kidman wore a 34 mm Constellation Small Seconds in 18K Sedna Gold, with a diamond-paved bezel and sun-brushed burgundy dial. As well, a showcase of her previous watches worn at award shows and red carpets was on display for guests to browse. The commemorative moment showed Kidman’s admiration for vintage and vintage-inspired timepieces. “OMEGA has timepieces from the ’20s and ’30s that are just absolutely beautiful, [they] look like works of art, but they’re also jewellery; they’re covered in rubies and diamonds and the most exquisite gems that really are jewellery pieces,” said Kidman when asked what the power of a timepiece means to her. “Part of my thing with wearing a watch is so that I’m not always checking my phone. Checking your phone for the time is sort of dangerous, because it pulls you into the vortex.”

Furthering their commitment to women in watchmaking, another celebration of the evening was for the previously released My Choice campaign. The campaign spotlights OMEGA’s female ambassadors through photos and videos, giving the women the liberty to show the watch that best represents their style and true character. Joining Nicole Kidman in the shoot were fellow actors Zoë Kravitz, So-hee Han, Dongyu Zhou, models Kaia Gerber and Kiki Mizuhara, and athlete Allyson Felix. The influential women can be seen wearing pieces from the Constellation, Seamaster, De Ville, and Speedmaster collections, showcasing the differing characteristics of both watch and wearer. OMEGA’s longstanding commitment to honouring women and working with such a multidisciplinary and powerful group of talent has forged a bond with women lasting over 100 years. The My Choice campaign is about celebrating who you are, and Kidman is content with constantly changing and evolving, “I don’t think you ever arrive; it’s always a journey. And that’s the journey for me, artistically and as a mother, as a partner, all those things are about existing in the discovery and the exploration and not so much at the arrival.”

When asked about her longstanding relationship with OMEGA, Kidman reflects on the detail and power that the timepieces hold. “There’s beauty in OMEGA’s watches in the sense of the way they’re made and constructed. Obviously there are people in this world that love watches to the point where they can pull them apart and put them back together again. I don’t have that expertise, but I just have a reverie for what they are, in the same way that some people have it for cars.” Seeing the ambassadors gathered in one room wearing the stunning timepieces is a clear indication of OMEGA’s history and the impact they’ve made and continue to make. It gives a reason to continue celebrating the importance of women in watchmaking.
