Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel Is a Biography in Motion

Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel collections are always one of the most talked-about moments of Fashion Month. For his fifth runway show with the brand, Blazy honours Gabrielle Chanel by creating a collection that pays homage to all the lives she lived and her layered story. The runway serves as a biography, an unravelling of time.

Spanning her early life through to her later years, the collection reveals fashion’s malleability, transforming from past to present to future. Through fashion, we can trace the changes and shifts within ourselves, and Blazy was fascinated by how that came through for Gabrielle.

The opening look featured Gabrielle Chanel’s own 2.55 bag from the Patrimoine archives, then created a full-circle moment by returning to it at the end with the final look on the same model, Dyanira Hurbuscher.

The show notes explain, ‘In the collection, the young Gabrielle becomes the various Chanel women she will be. They carry one within the other, a layered history of selves within a layered history of the clothing she wore.’

The show drew A-listers like Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman, Alexa Demie, Ella Rubin, Ayo Edebiri, and Pedro Pascal, all of whom admired and bopped along to Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” as models walked the runway.
