CHANEL’s creative director, Virginie Viard, referenced her love of photography and the stimulating fashion spectacles of yore throughout the Maison’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection. The designer reminisced about the lively runway happenings of the ‘80s, where models strutted down raised runways, with the intoxicating sound of flashbulbs competing with the accompanying soundtrack. As a pictorial extension of the presentation, Inez and Vinoodh photographed Lily Rose Depp, Alma Jodorowsky, JENNIE, Rebecca Dayan and Quannah Chasinghorse-Potts holding cameras and mimicking the photographers’ image-capturing capabilities. Viard enthusiastically notes how the camera is “a magical object and a sexy gesture, which evokes so many memories.”
Staged in the sprawling Grand Palais Éphémère, the collection featured lively swimsuit ensembles, mini dresses in bright pink and purple hues, and plenty of signature tweeds. Also in the mix were flouncy silhouettes befitting of a balmy summer breeze, and a series of finale frocks rendered in vibrant butterfly wing motifs. A carefree joie de vivre permeated throughout the space, as the models broke with traditional runway stoicism for a more jubilant strut—their smiles were an infectious sight to see after a turbulent year and a half.
