CHANEL’s Spring/Summer 2021 pre-collection gleans inspiration from Brazil for a Tropicália-infused outing. Featuring tonalities that evoke the Cariocan sky—yellow, pink, green, and blue—and graphic motifs that reference landscape architect Roberto Brule Marx, Virginie Viard’s latest collection is a breath of fresh, coastal air. Silhouettes remain purposefully fluid to complement a carefree joie de vivre, with looks exuding a day-to-night appeal.
Wardrobe staples, including the black and white colourway so dear to Gabrielle Chanel’s heart, are reinterpreted with accents of bold colours, with tie-dye effects and polychromatic tweeds featuring ribbons and sequins nuancing a playful aesthetic. While leisurewear remains a high focal point for the collection, each item is given an artisanal touch worthy of the brand’s skilled ateliers, whether it be jewelled buttons or sophisticated lacework.
As a result, CHANEL has tapped In-House model Amanda Sanchez, a native of Brazil, as the face for the pre-collection campaign shot by Tim Elkaïm. Sanchez notes how Viard and her team were able to authentically integrate Brazilian flourishes into the clothing and accessories on display. “This collection reminds me of my roots, where I come from…It is so colourful and fresh. These silhouettes are very sophisticated but also very cheerful, and I identified with them immediately.” Upon closer inspection of these fine garments, a wave of nostalgia washes over Sanchez, conjuring a vivid connection to her homeland. “I really like these motifs because they remind me of my childhood…I love the light-heartedness of the Brazilian inspiration. You also find it in the details, like these lucky charm bracelets revisited in braid and tweed.”
