Something New: At the Helm of The New Arrivals, Ilkyaz Özel Is Offering Brides a Fresh Perspective

There’s something distinct about Ilkyaz Özel‘s designs. They’re the sort of looks that stand out for the way they flatter women’s bodies and how they’re finished off with the most unexpected details that demand just the right amount of attention. And while she’s leading one of the buzziest brands on the market, Özel didn’t necessarily seek out this journey.

“I didn’t come to design through a traditional path,” she says. “I was always more interested in atmosphere, objects, and how they influence the way a woman carries herself. Clothing became the most immediate medium for that,” she continues. “Growing up in the Mediterranean, you see how style, confidence, and sensuality are naturally part of life. Designing was simply a way to formalize that instinct.”

Today, she has a clear vision for what she’s established, which will now be known as the designer-led house, ILKYAZ ÖZEL. “It is a Mediterranean design house built around occasion, sensuality, and presence. We design pieces that feel memorable, not disposable,” says Özel of her works built on intentionality and longevity. “There is always structure, a certain boldness, and a sense of pleasure,” she says. “The woman who wears us enjoys dressing, enjoys entering a room, and understands that style is a form of power.”

Özel knows what women want, so it’s not surprising to see so many drawn to her pieces, which are regularly picked for major events by celebrities like Chrissy TeigenHalle BerryAli Larter, and Selena Gomez. “Women today want pieces that feel distinctive without looking overworked,” she explains. “Special moments are emotional; weddings, celebrations, nights that stay in your memory. What you wear becomes part of that story,” says Özel. “I think women respond to the clarity of our point of view. The pieces have presence, but they still feel natural to wear.”

Dipping into bridal became an instinctive extension for Özel after formalwear. “It happened very organically. Many women were already wearing our pieces to important personal moments like engagements, ceremonies, celebrations,” she says. “Bridal felt like a natural evolution of that world. But we approached it the same way we approach everything else: not through tradition, but through attitude.” And it’s become exactly what her customers wanted.

“She’s confident and slightly unconventional. She doesn’t see the wedding as a costume moment, and she wants to feel like the strongest version of herself,” says Özel of her bride. “There is sensuality, there is elegance, but also a certain ease. She knows who she is.”

Much like in her formalwear, in bridal, Özel has become known for her strategic use of opulent embellishments, which turn beautiful gowns into the ones that continue to replay in your mind. “Because fashion should also be pleasurable. Feathers, textures, unexpected details, they create movement and emotion,” she says. “But they’re never just decoration. They are used very deliberately, almost like punctuation in a sentence,” she elaborates. “They bring a sense of celebration without overwhelming the silhouette.”

For her latest bridal collection, Özel set out to explore the idea of modern ceremony through a Mediterranean lens. “There is lightness, sensuality, and a certain confidence in the silhouettes,” she says. “Some pieces are very sculptural, others feel effortless and fluid. I wanted the bride to feel powerful but completely at ease, as if the dress belongs to her life, not just to the wedding day.”
