When it comes to holiday beauty, nothing is as timeless as a bold lip. With resort collections striking a refined tone, as seen in our Winter 2023 fashion story, there’s no better time to experiment with statement makeup. Here CHANEL‘s Makeup Artist and frequent S/ collaborator, Julie Cusson breaks down her go-to products and inspiration behind our fashion story’s beauty look and techniques to make the most out of your makeup.
How did you prep Mame’s skin considering the outdoor element of the shoot and the colder weather?
“Indeed, our skin care routine will change depending on the season. Skin texture and skin needs are not the same during summer and winter. When we are transitioning to the winter season many factors such as in-door heating, temperature change, and harsh weather will change the skin texture. Our skin needs additional protection and different nourishing agents.”
“Even with Mame’s amazing complexion, first I used L’Eau Micellaire to ensure the pH is balanced. Then, I chose N°1 de CHANEL to prep her skin for its anti-aging properties. I applied the Revitalizing Serum, its texture is almost like water, to smooth, firm, refine pores, and bring vitality. I followed with the Revitalizing Essence Lotion, a silky gel, to plump, unify and illuminate the skin. The contour around the eyes is an area where I always give special care; here I used the Revitalizing Eye Cream to smooth dark circles and energize the gaze. I finished with the Revitalizing Cream. This step is really important; it may seem very simple, but this step will seal all applied layers and create a moisturizing barrier. During the day, it’s not rare that I periodically use a mist to refresh as this gives a re-boost to the skin especially when we are doing an outdoor photoshoot. The Revitalizing Serum-in-Mist is my go-to!
The beauty looks lead with strong lip hues. Where did you draw inspiration from for the beauty looks in this shoot?
“For years we were so into the “no makeup” makeup look…I love this, but fresh colours can bring refinement and edginess to a makeup look, and this is my thing! Minimalist details that can be bold but simple. This is why it was natural for me to add this beautiful pink on Mame’s lips. To ensure the brightness of the pink, I first drew her lips with Le Crayon Lèvres in 166 Rose Vif and then added Rouge Allure Velvet in 43 La Favorite.”
Lip care is often overlooked. What’s one thing we can do this winter for a healthy looking pout?
“There are things in general that we know that can help with maintaining healthy lips. For example, drinking water, doing lip scrubs and using lip balm (my favourite is Rouge Coco Baume, because the balm is in a lipstick form, it lets you apply directly on your lips rather than having to put your finger in a jar).
“A perfect lip texture is the best base for a red, vivid colour or dark shade lipstick. There is nothing worse than chapped or textured lips covered with lipstick. We often forget how simply wearing a lip gloss can protect from the cold and ensure hydration throughout the day. And this can be more stylish than wearing lip balm. I prefer when there is a hint of hue in the clear lip gloss but not colourless! I like Rouge Coco Gloss in 726 Icing. My biggest tip: opt for a lip gloss regularly and your lips will be ready for a bold lipstick application anytime!”
What three beauty products should we add to our makeup bag for the holiday season?
“During this Holiday season, my must-have products are: Éclat Lunaire in 887 Or Rose, which is an illuminating powder that creates shimmery cheeks with a hint of bronze-pink. For lips, Rouge Allure Laque in 89 Rouge Ombré is a perfect sparkly, deep red shade. This long-lasting liquid lipstick has a perfect satiny finish. To look flawless every evening, use the newest concealer, Sublimage Le Correcteur Yeux. This concealer combines eyecare with nourishing ingredients and a colour corrector. The finish with this concealer is natural and also provides excellent coverage to cover dark circles. It comes with a nice small brush with bristles cut perfectly for an impeccable application.”
