S/ Was There: CHANEL Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture

Virgine Viard presented the CHANEL Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture show in a space transformed into the cloister garden of the Abbey of Aubazine. The garden is a place Gabrielle Chanel spent time in as a child, surrounded by geometric patterns, stained glass windows, and, of course, flowers.

With Gabrielle Chanel always at the top of mind when designing a collection, the location held more of a meaning with the elements reflected in the clothing as well. Youthful energy can be felt and seen in the silhouettes of the clothing and the ankle socks paired with white tights, embodying the spirit of a school girl. Echoes of the inspired garden are seen in the stained glass and floral motifs in the garments.

With ambassadors such as Caroline de Maigret, Kristine Froseth, and Pharrell Williams in attendance, the show came to a finale after the final look: a triple collared wedding dress in crêpe georgette with a veil embroidered with the branches of wisteria, paired with ankle socks and black shoes. Timeless, elegant, daring, CHANEL.
