A Look at Mickalene Thomas’s First Solo Exhibition in Canada

The Art Gallery of Ontario offers an exciting introduction to the work of Mickalene Thomas in her first large-scale Canadian solo exhibition. “Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires”—in partnership with the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans—explores beauty, race, identity, and the ways pop culture portrays the black female body. Highlights of her work include internationally acclaimed collage-based portraits that combine a lush composition of colour with texture and bold, fragmented shapes. Thomas creatively captures glamour and confidence through her muses, including Diana Ross and Diahann Carroll, as well as friends and former lovers.

“Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires” is on view at the AGO from November 29, 2018 to March 24, 2019. Scroll through the gallery to see a few highlights from the exhibition.
